Reading
* Read books that are structured in different ways and read for a range of purposes.
* Ask questions to improve their understanding.
* Draw inferences and justify them with evidence from the text.
* Summarise the main ideas from more than one paragraph and identify the key details that support these ideas.
* Discuss and evaluate how authors use language, including figurative language, considering the impact on the reader.
* Know the difference between statements of fact and opinion.
* Retrieve, record and present information from non-fiction.
* Participate in discussions about books that are read to them and those they can read for themselves.
* Provide reasoned justifications for their views.
* Make comparisons within and between books .
Writing
* Use relative clauses beginning with who, which, where, why, whose and that.
* Show degrees of possibility using adverbs (e.g. perhaps, surely) or modal verbs (e.g. might, should, will, must).
* Choose words to show a sequence of events within a paragraph (e.g. then, after that, firstly).
* Make links between ideas across paragraphs using adverbials of time (e.g. later, before), place (e.g. nearby, below) and number (e.g. secondly).
* Use brackets, dashes or commas to indicate parenthesis (extra detail).
* In narratives, describe settings, characters and atmosphere and include dialogue to show what the character is like and move the action on.
* Ensure the consistent and correct use of tense throughout a piece of writing.
* Write legibly, fluently and with increasing speed.
Maths—Number only
* Read, write, order and compare numbers up to at least 1 000 000.
* Round any number up to 1 000 000 to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10 000 and 100 000.
* Read Roman numerals to 1000 (M).
* Add and subtract numbers with more than 4 digits using the formal written method.
* Identify multiples & factors; find factor pairs of a number & common factors of 2 numbers.
* Multiply numbers up to 4 digits by a one or two-digit number using a formal written method.
* Divide numbers up to 4 digits by a one-digit number using the formal written method of short division.
* Multiply and divide numbers mentally drawing upon known times tables facts .
* Add & subtract fractions with the same denominator & denominators that are multiples of the same number.
* Multiply proper fractions & mixed numbers by whole numbers.
* Read, write, order and compare numbers with up to three decimal places .
* Solve number problems and practical problems that involve all of the above.
