Accessibility Statement

Our commitment to accessibility

At Gayton Junior School, we are committed to ensuring our website is accessible to all users, including pupils, parents, staff, and visitors with disabilities.

We want as many people as possible to be able to:

  • Navigate most of the website using a keyboard
  • Listen to content using a screen reader
  • Zoom in up to 300% without text spilling off the screen
  • Access key information in a clear and structured format

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

We know that some parts of our website are not fully accessible and are working to address these:

1. Documents and PDFs

Some documents (such as curriculum overviews and policies) are provided as PDFs and may:

  • Not be fully accessible to screen reader users
  • Lack proper headings or tagging
  • Be difficult to navigate using assistive technologies

Example: curriculum documents on pages such as Year 6.

2. Images and alternative text

Some images across the website:

  • Do not have appropriate alternative (alt) text
  • May include text within images that is not accessible to screen readers

3. Page structure and headings

Some pages may:

  • Use inconsistent heading structures
  • Make navigation harder for screen reader users

4. Embedded content

Some embedded features such as:

  • Maps on the contact page
  • External links and embedded media

may not be fully accessible or may not include accessible alternatives.

5. Colour contrast and visual design

In some areas of the website:

  • Colour contrast may not meet minimum accessibility standards
  • This may affect readability for users with visual impairments

What we are doing to improve accessibility

We are actively working to improve accessibility by:

  • Reviewing and replacing inaccessible PDF documents with accessible formats
  • Adding meaningful alternative text to images
  • Improving heading structure and page layout
  • Checking colour contrast across the site
  • Working with our website provider to improve compliance
