We were delighted to have the opportunity to purchase Make Your Own History in March 2024 after hosting Charlie Lupton’s workshops at Gayton for over ten years.
Mr O’Donnell has already delivered the Stone Age to Iron Age, Roman and Tudor workshops in school as part of our topic work in years 3 and 5 in 2024.
We are now able to offer half day morning workshops on site to local schools to make history come to life. with our Roman and Tudor Workshops!
Please click here if you would like to find out more about how to book one of these workshops for your school.
We are planning to deliver all five workshops this year:
Stone Age to Iron Age Workshop
This workshop goes back 12,000 years and covers a mere 10,000! We start at around 10,000BC and finish at 43AD when the Romans invaded England. The activities are carefully chosen to relate to this span of time. During the workshop, the children will: experience flint knapping, grind wheat into flour, use primitive drills to make jewellery, build a large foam Stonehenge, build a life-size Iron Age Roundhouse.
Viking Workshop
We take to the seas in our Viking workshop, creating a Viking Longship in the hall that is large enough for children to “sail” when it is complete! During the workshop, the children will: build the Viking Longship, weave “sails” on a Viking “warp-weighted loom”, sew sails for the ship, make “authentic” Viking shields, design oar blades and dragon heads.
Roman Workshop
Become Roman Legionaries and build two Roman ‘Onagar’ catapults that really fire missiles! During the workshop, the children will: build two 2m long ‘Onagar’ (kicking mule) catapults, build a section of Roman road, create ‘The Bridge over the River Rhine’, create battle standards, design and create standard medals, wear and hold Roman armour and weapons.
Egyptian Workshop
Travel back in time to Ancient Egypt and work as a team to build a 3m x 3m (at the base) Egyptian Pyramid. The pyramid rises to 2.4m at the capstone. The pyramid contains 240 blocks of ‘stone’ which is roughly equivalent to the number of real stone blocks the Ancient Egyptians fitted into place each day! The Pyramid contains a secret entrance and passageway that leads to the burial chamber deep within the Pyramid itself. During the workshop, the children will: build the Pyramid itself, use a sledge to move ‘building blocks’ just as the Egyptians did, disembowel a ‘body’ and place the innards into canopic jars as well as wrapping two bodies in bandages, make ‘papyrus’ the Egyptian way, use chisels to carve hieroglyphics into rock, limestone and granite.
Tudor Workshop
Become Tudor craftsmen and build a Tudor house in the school hall that is large enough for 30 children to sit in! During the workshop, the children will: use carpenter’s marks to assemble the Tudor house, work in teams to build a poor man’s house, make wattle panels, bodge (shape) the pegs used to pin houses together, tile a section of roof.
